Keysi Fighting Method
I am a huge fan of Keysi Fighting Method as a self defense system. I found the movement to be very organic and creative, especially during an adrenalin release state of combat. So Keysi Fighting Method has the honor of having their own web page on my site. I hope to attend one of their seminar of buy their instructional DVD when is release.

What is Keysi Fighting Method (KFM)
KFM makes use of multiple attacking ranges, with or without weapons. The KFM trademark is the thinking man (Pensador) and thinking man attack (pensataq), which makes use of a tight defensive shape to protect the most precious part of the body, the head, and smashes and opens up the opponent for the finish using all ranges of strikes – punches, hammer fists, kicks, knees, head butts, and the sharp elbows, all at high, middle and low lines on the opponent. Unlike many martial arts, KFM tends to get into extreme close quarters when in combat. From the Pensador defense a variety of counter attacks to vital targets (such as the biceps, kidneys or solar plexus) are often launched. KFM also relies on understanding how people typically move or attack in a fight so that when striking, the opponent’s body moves to expose further targets.
The shape of the thinking man represents the unification of the mind and body.
Also making KFM unique is its “360-degree” approach to multi-assailant attacks whether standing, kneeling, sitting or lying down. Unique in KFM’s philosophy is the redefining of the terms “predator and prey” as well, where the would-be victim becomes the predator and the would-be attackers his/her prey.
KFM shares similarity in principles with modern street fighting systems such as Sari-An and Bakbakan.
Most schools offering KFM are located in Europe, but seminars have been introducing it to America where instruction has now been established in Texas, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware and Orlando, Florida.

KFM is not meant to be a new style but a new way of thinking, an expression of self-defense where the challenge is to better understand how the mind and body function, and to do that one must crack open the conditioning of the human mind. Everybody’s training is an ongoing attempt to evolve and grow, and with an open mind, desire and passion there are no limits other than the limits you impose on yourself.
KFM incorporates the martial arts with the body’s natural instincts and reactions, this makes it very easy to pick up, many times during my training I have found myself “feeling” what I was going to do next due to the natural flow and the body’s ability to tell you what it wants to do and where it wants to go, sounds strange but if you’ve tried it you’ll know what I mean.

KFM is a way of understanding, developing, expressing and transmitting knowledge. KFM is not an ‘Art of Arts’ nor is it a conglomerate of techniques extracted from different styles. Rather it is a way — a philosophy of life based on the growth of a person — with Martial Arts as transportation element that follows a philosophy based on knowledge, research and experimentation. KFM is then not a copy of this or that, nor is it a theoretical explanation of many different martial arts. On the contrary it is a perfectly planned and defined unity of concepts and principles, fruit of long, rigorous and tested introspection.

Batman Begins production notes discussing Keysi and why it was used in the movie.
In developing Batman’s singular method of hand-to-hand combat and choreographing the film’s visceral fight sequences, director Christopher Nolan and fight arranger David Forman (The Last Samurai) were looking to find a style that marries the gritty intensity of street fighting with a disciplined martial arts approach.
“For Batman, everything is about function, it’s about the most effective way of doing something,” Nolan says, “so we needed a style that is brutal, economical and real.”
“We really wanted something that would look as though Bruce Wayne-as-Batman had created his own style of fighting, something that was unique in style and look,” Christian Bale elaborates. “A big part of the Batman persona is the aggressive, animalistic way he attacks his enemies. I wanted to show how devastating he is when he charges forward and attacks people, and his resilience in taking blows as well.”
The director also wanted the combat to be more jarring and realistic than the graceful, balletic form of fighting that comes from wire work. “We’ve gotten comfortable seeing fighting portrayed in this graceful, dance-like fashion to the point where the violence loses its threat,” he muses. “I wanted to take it back to a grittier place, where you feel the punches a bit more.”
The Keysi Fighting Method, also known as Keysi or KFM, is based on a series of tight, controlled, efficient movements. An evolving discipline that was founded only 20 years ago, Keysi is an intuitive, low-grounded fighting method that requires superior leg and upper body strength, with a strong emphasis on mental focus and awareness. Unlike other martial arts developed for sport, KFM lends itself to combat in close quarters and can be applied to fighting in any environment, against multiple attackers from all directions.
“The Keysi Fighting Method is a very intuitive kind of martial art, but also very, very brutal,” Bale relates. “It’s all about going for the break straightaway. It’s quite instinctive and it adapts to many different situations. So it truly looks as though this is Batman’s own style that he’s come up with.”
