Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit or be knocked out depending on what submission method is used. The art was based on early 20th century Kodokan Judo ,^[2][1] which was itself then a recently-developed system (founded in 1882), based on multiple schools (or Ryu) of Japanese Jujutsu.

It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant. It primarily uses Judo takedowns to gain the dominant position. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.^[3] Sparring (commonly referred to as ‘rolling’) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

Submissions 101 is run by the resident Shogun and El Presidente Ari Bolden. He started the website back in 2007 after he noticed that there wasn’t a good resource for jiu jitsu that was totally free and open to all. After catching arrows one day, he thought “why not make a site where the explanations are clear and easy to follow.” Submissions 101 was born and he hasn’t looked back. Ari is the owner of 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Victoria (Home of Submissions 101), and direct student under Eddie Bravo. He holds a purple belt under Eddie and he is also a Japanese Jujutsu and Aikido Black Belt. He’s been ‘doing the martial arts thing’ since 1984 and is currently the President of the Jiu Jitsu BC Society.

In less than 2 years, Submissions 101 has become one of the most viewed jiu jitsu resources on the Internet and the most viewed JJ videos on You Tube. Eddie “The Twister” Bravo (birth name Edgar Cano), is an American practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who holds a black belt under Jean-Jacques Machado. He is most famous for his win as a brown belt against Royler Gracie by triangle choke in the 2003 Abu Dhabi Submission Wrestling championships and his unique style of no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, called 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. He is also known for his mixed martial arts commentating on the Ultimate Fighting Championship, music composition, and strong marijuana advocacy. He lives in Hollywood, California, where he runs his 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu school out of Legends MMA.
