Great attempt from legendary Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Master – Rickson Gracie in bring in Budo back into grappling. I love the way the stage is set and how each competitor have to wear a gi. Also the rules have been greatly modified from traditional Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to push the action and to get the competitor to go for submission rather than winning by points.

What is the Budo Challenge?

Budo is the martial way that defines the physical, mental and spiritual powers of the warrior. The Budo Challenge brings together the top submission fighters in the world, including BJJ world champions, Olympic judo players, and UFC, Pride, and Shooto fighters to display the abilities, skills, and character that make a true champion.

The purpose of the Budo Challenge is not only to show top combat athletes in action, but to provide an insight into the minds and souls of the fighters. Just as life consists of preparation, execution, and adaptation to unexpected results, the Budo Challenge shows a microcosm of life through fighter interviews, personal stories, and philosophical outlooks. The audience gains a profound understanding of the struggle and sacrifice each fighter makes.

The Budo Challenge is the first professional submission fighting league with the vision to dignify and value the world’s elite grapplers and allow them to serve as role models and be positive influences for current and future generations in our communities.

BUDO CHALLENGE #1 DVD

Rickson Gracie’s Budo Challenge is the first martial arts competition to search for, expose and reward the true warrior. It brings together elite martial art fighters that possess the balance of three dimensions: mind body and spirit.

As Mixed Martial Arts get more and more mainstream and more popular it moves farther away from the Budo Spirit of martial arts. I feel that the general public will love the spectacles of fighting but not understand the deeper meaning of really martial arts training.

I started training in martial arts back in 1995 1st in Thai Boxing and than in Judo. Back in the days there was not such thing a mixed martial arts the way we know of it today. There were people who cross train and dabble in more than one martial arts style but not the way martial arts are taught and train today.

We have the luxury of having tremendous amount of information when it comes to books, DVD and the internet. I honest believe the modern day mixed martial artist/fighter are better train physically and mentally. But unfortunately for much gain there is much lost. If we are not carefully as community of Mixed Martial Artist we will be face with backlash from the public that does not understand the amount of dedication we put into our arts. Instead, the public will view us as bunch of brute with tattoo beating up on each other. Spike TV and the UFC franchise does not care if the publics have a complete skew perspective on martial arts.

When I 1st started, I fully embraced Bruce Lee’s philosophy of using what works and discarding what is useless. Mixed Martial Arts are great vehicle for that since is one of the few arts that are constant battle tested without the foul tactic being use. I truly believe that MMA is the go to art for empty hand fighting arts.

So what is the alternatives. There are several in the martial arts community that is not very popular in America yet. Kudo is one of them, a martial arts style the combines all elements of Mixed Martial Arts. What make Kudo unique is that the combatant fight with a heavy karate gi/judo gi and helmets. Aside from that, Kudo also emphasis the Budo Spirit as a major component of their training.

For the last year I have been teaching with a slight different emphasis. Maybe I am getting older now, in all my classes my students are require to wear a well fitting Judo/BJJ uniform. Even in the kickboxing class.

We bow before and after every classes. I also started focusing more on self defense which is very vital component of martial arts training that I notice lot of Mixed Martial Arts School tend not to emphasis.

Finally there is belt ranking process for each discipline I teach. This provide goals and milestone for my students.

If you have not check out Kudo, I suggest you check out this book – What is Kudo?

Kudo is great alternative for any martial artist who believe in being well rounded and being able to fight in all phase of the fight game. I believe in the near future more and more Mixed Martial Artist will embrace some form of Kudo. If you are interested in developing Kudo like program in your school pleases contact me.

Stay strong and faithful

The media has gone from completely ignoring us in the early sixties to seemingly only granting visibility to those who believe that it’s in vogue to condone violence, and/or that it is okay to send kids the message that adults accept the use of violence as a means to resolve problems. This is not the message that parents in martial arts wish to have their kids taught to value or with which to have them exposed. Just as “Pro Wrestling” is not real wrestling, in a way, perhaps MMA is not real martial arts.

How can you teach and preach self discipline, control, respect and leadership when all you see the UFC promoting is violence, vulgarity, pornography and lacking any self control by beating the crap out of your opponent?
The same traditional martial artist that embraces the unrealistic artistic form of Hong Kong and Hollywood style martial arts in the movies (flying martial artist, fancy high kicking and Randy Coutureone guy beating a few hundred opponents at the same time) have a hard time accepting the growing MMA revolution. They say that they do not want to see thugs beating each other up without values, honor and respect. I agree yet also disagree with that statement. Yes, many mixed martial arts schools cater to tough thugs and they do not teach values. Teaching fighting without values is just street fighting.
I compilation of flinch response cover/Default Position.
I was first exposed to the Flinch Response indirectly when I was watching some of Paul Vunak’s Rapid Assault Tactics (R.A.T.) DVD on employing the Straight Blast to set up more attack on your attacker back in late 2000. In his video he explained the 3 responses someone would have against the Straight Blast which are:

At the time, I did not understand the significance of the natural flinch response as I was still a beginner in my martial journey. As of late (the last 5 years) I started teaching more and more martial arts techniques base of the natural flinch response. I hope to post a few videos of some of the new tactics and strategies that I have been working on very soon.

Check out this great coffee table book ( it is in paperback – so is not a true coffee table book) on combat sports by Philippe Di Folco. More specifically Wrestling and Boxing. You can read the book in its entirety on Google Book.

The books id divided into 5 chapters:

Part 1: The origins of Combat

Part 2: Wrestling – An Open Sports

Part 3: From the Streets to the Ring

Part 4: The Civillian Arena

Part 5: Appendix

My biggest complaint is that in “Part 2: Wrestling – An Open Sports” all the full page photographs were of submission wrestling and not Greco Roman or Free Style this may confuse the reader.

This is a nice coffee table books that give a general and historical information on two of the Worlds’ oldest sports.

http://www.brockport.edu/recservices/Youth%20and%20Family%20Programs/Judo%20Instruction/main.htm

All I can say it was awesome. His footworks, entries and attacks very similar with my long time Judo Instructor – Mohammad Khorrami. In today’s clinic he focus strictly on Tachi-Waza. Instead of teaching us bunch of fancy throw he focus on three basic throws and what type of concept we need to take from learning these three throws.

The 1st throw we focus on was Ouchi Gari. Several important concepts that were taught when practicing Ouchi Gari (Large Inner Reaping) was constant body contact, Tori’s tilting of the body, the constant diving motion and using the wrist motion to set up the vector force of the rest of the body for an aggressive Ouchi Gari throw

The second throw we focus on was the classic Ippon Seoi Nage (One Arm Shoulder Throw). The major focus that Sensei wanted us to master was the hip turn and the single leg balance in which it should be constant moving and not stuck in a static position. This will allowed the Tori to switch to any other throws when being counter.

The third and final throw was the Tai Otoshi (Body Drop). One major detail Sensei Ignacio pointed out was the arc of our arms and that our throwing motions needs to be in a smooth arc and not a sharp vector change. When we throw our opponent/Uke in smooth arc, we save energy and is much more efficient in our execution of our throws.

It was my 1st time at SUNY Brockport Judo Club – Renshinkan Judo Dojo home of Dr. Sachio Ashida (now deceased). The dojo was very spacious and the tatami mat was brand new layout out in a competition manner.
